Snickers launches new campaign | Review | colourless opinions™

Posted: 09 Apr 2012 11:19 AM PDT

Popular chocolate bar brand Snickers launched You're Not You When You're Hungry campaign last Thursday (5 April 2012) at the Sports City Futsal Centre in Petaling Jaya. It was quite an enjoyable event with Harimau Malaya football team's captain Safiq Rahim, star attacking midfielder S. Kunanlan (known to me as the speedy left winger who played impressively against Arsenal), and head coach Datuk K. Rajagopal present. The hosts were Hitz.fm's JJ and Ian.

The campaign was literally kicked off when national football players scored the ball to the virtual net shown on the screen of the stage. They were missing the target until their head coach gave them some Snickers to fill their empty stomachs. Obviously staged but it was a smart and simple presentation to get the message across. I almost laughed my ass off seeing them act right in front of me.
Datuk K. Rajagopal displayed class by showing some sense of humour and not doing any hard-selling for Snickers during the interview session. "Actually when my players make a mistake, I will have them do push-ups instead," he said. He also said, "It's important for the players to have sufficient food 2-3 days before a football match in order for them to perform at their best." He was later asked to show his angry look, which he did. What a man.

The campaign is not only run in Malaysia, but in Singapore and Philippines as well, featuring a new Snickers TV commercial and an online contest. You may check out the TV commercial on the Facebook page of ColourlessOpinions.com. I thought it's quite original and hilarious but I believe it may get a little annoying if it's overplayed. They showed it thrice subsequently at the launch in different languages (BM, English and Chinese) and although the actors are different, they're still the exact same commercial. The grand prize winner of the online contest will get a pair of invitation to catch an European Football Championship 2012 match in Poland. All the participants have to do is upload their best hungry faces on the Facebook contest application of Snickers Malaysia.

The launch didn't end there. There was also a little futsal game which some of the Nuffnang Glitterati Plus bloggers including myself joined. Kunanlan and Safiq each led a team and we were on the star winger's side. There was a made-up rule that we have to smile throughout the game (for the media's cameras, duh) otherwise a free-kick would be given to the opposing team. It was quite fun but I was a little disappointed that Kunanlan refused to play more seriously. He made quite a few errors, including a failed pass to me when I tried to play a one-two with him. Although we lost by 2-0 in the end, we still got a hamper of Snickers. The prize was Asian-ly deceiving. The centre of the hamper was empty with cardboards holding its generous shape.

The event was brought to its closure with a penalty kick successfully scored by Datuk K. Rajagopal with the host JJ in the goal. I'm still curious why the Harimau Malaya head coach pointed at me and did the smelly hand gesture when we were waiting to have the photograph below taken. Was my odor really that bad? Or does he really despise Arsenal that much? I did sweat a lot though so it was most likely about my odor.
